  • Surgeon General should be saying, "Shut up"

I’ve wanted to write something about this for quite some time…

As many of you might know, Ball State is enforcing a Smoking Ban this coming December. I personally think that this ban thing is stupid. There shouldn’t even be a discussion about whether or not we should have one.:

First of all, how does BSU think they can enforce a CAMPUS-WIDE BAN when they can’t even enforce an ENTRANCE INTO THE BUILDING BAN? I don’t know if they can’t do it, or just won’t do it, but either way, BSU isn’t enforcing the rules on such a small playing field… why make the field as big as possible?

Second, this whole talk about second-hand smoke killing people and stuff is a little blown out of proportion. Now, before you hit the comment link and flame me, hear me out. I realize people have died due to second-hand smoke and all, but I can guarantee that none of those deaths were because you casually walked by a smoker and got a whiff of cigarette smoke! Every article I’ve read that mentions the dangers of second-hand smoke and how much “cleaner” our campus would be if we didn’t have any, tries to paint this horrible picture of a perpetual death-cloud of cigarette-smoking hatred looming over the campus.

You have asthma? If you see a smoker, don’t walk right into them. Yes, I realize some smokers walk around through groups of people and you can’t help it… I’ll get to that later.

I’m not sure how people get off thinking they have better right over others. Smokers have made the choice to smoke. That is their choice and their right as an American citizen. Who are we to say that they can’t express their own freedom?

    BUT!!!!!!

    There is another side.

Those who don’t smoke have chosen not to smoke. So why should non-smokers be forced to smell and be around people that DO smoke? Some non-smokers downright detest smoking, and the slightest whiff of cigarette smoke sets them off worse than a smoker who hasn’t had a cigarette for a day.

Yes, our campus would be cleaner. We wouldn’t have the cigarette butts laying all over campus, we wouldn’t have ashtrays laying around, falling over, whatever…

    SMOKER-ETIQUETTE

    Dear smokers,

There are ways to prevent non-smokers from hating you. First of all, when you light up, don’t do it in a group of people. Don’t light up walking to your next class. Find a fairly secluded yet comfortable place to smoke. If you don’t have time to stop and smoke before your next class, then, maybe you shouldn’t light up, or just risk being late to your next class everyday… or smoke shorts, not 100’s.

When you’re done smoking, THROW YOUR BUTT (haha) INTO AN ASHTRAY, OR OTHER DISPOSAL AREA. I think it’s so stupid to find cigarette butts all over the ground TEN FEET AWAY FROM THE ASHTRAY. Actually, it’s stupid to find ANY trash ten feet away from the trash can, but crap happens. Do your part in protecting your right.

When talking to non-smoker friends, don’t light up! That’s just plain rude! I think it’s rude to light up when talking to anyone, regardless of whether they smoke or not (unless you’re both smoking at the same time, then no one cares), but whatever.

There is something you have to realize. You have made a choice in your life, and you have to live with the good and bad of this choice. YOU made a decision that YOU have to live with. It is unfair and RUDE to force others to live with the choice that YOU made.

    Dear non-smokers,

Sometimes you just need to grow up. If you’re complaining about the people that are smoking while walking around, or smoking right next to an entrance, TELL THEM! It’s so junior-high to gossip and hate on another group of people without ever letting them know that what they do bothers you.

TRUE STORY: I was walking though the State Fair with one of my good friends, and got a sudden overwhelming whiff of cigarette smoke. I kinda stopped a bit, and my friend asked me what was wrong. I told him, “I just got a big whiff of cigarette smoke!” The woman in front of me turned around, holding a cigarette.
    “Does cigarette smoke bother you?”
“A little,” I replied. She smiled.
    “Alright. I’ll wait.”
She put out her cigarette on the ground and threw it away in a nearby ashtray.
    “Uhh… thanks.”
    “No problem. I understand, completely.”
    And she walked away.

Most smokers know that people can’t stand the smell of cigarette smoke, but they just don’t realize it when they light up. If you KINDLY ask a smoker to move to another area so non-smokers can pass without problem, most of them will apologize and move.

Now, I realize this is all one man’s point of view, and one man’s account, but so is everyone else’s. That is what forms our decisions and opinions. I’m not trying to sound opinionated or forcing of my ideas, but there aren’t enough people out there that are trying to view things from two different angles. We’ve got too many people saying, “ENFORCE A BAN I HATE SMOKING!” or “DON’T ENFORCE A BAN I *NEED* TO SMOKE WHEREVER I STAND (which is a different topic for a different day).”

Just trying to find a place for middle ground.

  • Cheers \0/

    Well, it's been a while...

And to prove myself a hypocrite, I hate it when people say that. Of course it's been a while. You've not posted something for months! You should be surprised that Xanga hasn't flipped out and canned your account by now.

Okay, I've just had a rough day...

But for some reason, my life seems to be spiraling upward.

Lately, I've been okay, but every day seemed to be the same thing. Everything began to drone on. It was starting to sound like Savage Garden on repeat: cute, but no.

I'm not sure what the cause of it has been. Pretty much everything I've tried to do to break this incessant "blah" of a month has failed. Tons of exciting things have happened, but I've taken each of them as the next bite of a meal I'm not really hungry for... could that be it?

Anyway, today started out pretty well, despite the fact that I'm sick (stuffy nose bit... you know), and, seemingly, went downhill... My coworker reminded me of a girl I went to high school with: she knows everything... literally. Disagree with her, and somehow, she will twist the conversation in such a way that it looks like she was never disagreeing with you in the first place. She has gone through every situation humanly possible, even if she hasn't...  and she knows where every location is in the world. She just uses a map to prove it to other people. If someone asks you a question, she will talk over you.

But in the end, you're all still friends! :)

ANYway... you might be asking yourself, "How does any of this add up to a 'spiraling upward' life?" Well, that or "Why am I reading this?" But I'll ignore the latter.

"I'm not sure," would be the most appropriate answer. I think if just about anyone else had lived my life for today, they would have come out half-way disappointed or angry at LEAST.

Sometimes it should be enough that it just didn't feel like a bad day. Sometimes it should be enough that things are changing. Sometimes, it should be enough that I'm feeling better with no good reason.

However many disappointing things that are going on in my life at this moment there are (wow...) it doesn't seem to be able to upset the balance of peace I have... I know I have no one to thank but God Himself... and I do.

I feel like I've come home.

  • Freaky story...

Just a few minutes ago, I was talking on the phone with Jake (who's in Illinois, right now) while playing a computer game.

Suddenly, I heard that high-pitched whine sound that you hear every time you turn on a TV or something, and I saw a bright flash of white-blue light fill my entire room. This light didn't seem to just illuminate the room like light normally does. Like a liquid, the light seeped into every crack and corner of my room. All other light became darkness in its wake. The only thing I could see was my computer monitor, and the colors on it.

I spun around, and the only thing there was my TV... which was off... it has been for the past hour, now...

I'm afraid to turn it on, because Samara might climb out of it or something...

Just kidding... I turned it on, and it works fine. I unplugged it, though, so demons can't come out of it.

On second thought, I don't even know if it was my TV... I just don't know what else it could be. The flash came from inside my room. The flash had to have come  from behind me, as there's nothing in front of me that could produce such a flash (and if it did, I might have been struck blind for a minute or two).

Everything I have plugged up still works, as well as all of my lights.

    Creeepyyyyyyyyyy.................

  • For those of you who don't talk to me every day, or read every single one of my bulletins on Myspace, or check my away message every time I go away, I have news for you!

My dad had a heart transplant this past weekend. He went into surgery around 1:00AM on Saturday morning, and was in surgery for only 3 and a half hours! We were told that surgeries like this generally take at least 6 hours, so the speedy surgery was a major plus.

So far, my dad's body hasn't been rejecting this new heart, which is another major plus. That's really the only other thing we're concerned about.

As per what the nurses told us, most heart transplant patients remain in the hospital at least a week and a half. My dad may be released even before a week! He has recovered that quickly!

We've been going down to the hospital just about every day to talk to him and stuff. Today, he was moved to "step-down," which just means that he has a bigger room, more freedom, and can now freely have visitors. Go visit him! He gets bored sitting in his room all day!

Thanks for all of your prayers, cards, food, encouragements, and whatever else you all have given us! We love you so much!

Oh, and we don't need anymore cake. We have three chocolate cakes right now... my mom can't eat chocolate, and I don't think my dad can eat cake... so that leaves us kids... and we can only eat so much before we get sick/fat... anyway...
